About Us

Many of our principles and values are taken from what we learned from Polar Explorers. An analysis of 92 expeditions by Jonathan Karpoff (University of Washington) determined that the best predictor of an expeditions outcome was how it was funded and managed.

We believe there is a direct analogy to our industry and the success of Asset Management and Financial Services businesses.

Big expeditions cost more, lost more men and ships whilst making significantly fewer discoveries. Leaders were often selected because of their political connections rather than competency and efficiency.

Successful, privately funded expeditions were characterised by:

  • Smaller, more agile teams

  • Hand picked crews in flat organisational structures

  • Clear roles and direct stakes in mission outcome

  • Efficient use of available resources

  • Impartial, focussed leadership

  • Fast and effective communication

From our experience, there are significant lessons that can be learned from polar expeditions for Asset Management and Financial Services businesses:

  • Clearly defined goals, leadership and responsibility

  • Smaller, more agile teams

  • Relentless focus on the desired outcome

  • Short lines of communication

  • Regular milestones on the road to success
